Excessive Ash in Pent House

Excessive Ash in Pent House

The build-up of ash may grow to several feet, leading to deposits of tons of fly on the boiler roof. Over the time, this weight on the building structure may result in metallurgical strain, which in rare case might lead to boiler collapse.

The uncooled construction parts such as rods and hangers can get overheated with the insulating properties of fly ash.

The cooling down time of fly ash is very high and it usually takes one week. This leads to delay in other maintenance activity every time. Moreover, the bypass of flue gas into the upper dead space of boiler environment reduces combustion efficiency.

The adverse effects of excessive air infiltration.

Increase in Slagging.

High carbon in fly ash or increase in loss on ignition in fly ash ( loss in energy)

Need for superheat and/or re heat attemperator spraying

Increased corrosion rate

In sufficient flow in oxygen can lower wind box pressure

Produce poor burner –to-burner secondary air distribution

Decrease in combustion efficiency

Over all decreased unit efficiency & availability

Poor NOx burner performances

Fly ash accumulation in the penthouse or header enclosure interferes with outage repairs

Safety as related to header enclosures and penthouse that overhang area below which personnel may be working.
